How did you discover cosplay and what made you start in this hobby? How long ago?
L: I discovered the world of cosplay through YouTube when I was still very young. I stumbled upon Blizzcon Cosplay Contest, and felt fascinated by all those amazing costumes of characters I loved so much. In 2014, friends of mine went to a convention in a city near mine, and said they were going to create cosplays for the event. I jumped in, and created my first costume ever ! I never stopped since then.
H: I discovered cosplay in 2002 with a group of Star Wars cosplayers. They were gathering in a French con and seeing stormtroper and sith (Sith power!) made me start cosplaying two years later. My first cosplay was a Sith Lord in 2005.
I: I started cosplay in 1996 for a new year’s eve party before it became mainstream in France. Then I started wearing cosplays at convention and enter the first contest, in 1997.
How did you choose your project for the ICL preselection? Is this your first time joining an international cosplay competition?
L: I am a very huge fan of Warcraft universe, and more especially World of Warcraft, so making a character from that universe was definitely something I really wanted to do for such a long period of crafting. I picked an outfit I really loved for its colours and overall look. For the Troll part… Well, I really loved the technical challenge of making prosthetics for my hands, my ears, and my teeth. Also, I’m kind of a troll myself; it was fitting my sassy personnality !
H: We decided to choose The mask of Zoro because it seems that I look like Antonio Banderas (lol). And Zorro is probably one of my first hero. The Project we had was very hard and even challenging because for me (Halcyonside) it’s the first time I am joining an international competition.
I: We decided to cosplay this group because we also love this movie very much. It’s my 5th time to enter an international competition. I was twice the French representative for Eurocosplay, one time for the CCCC and once for the Cosplay World Masters.
What does cosplay mean for you? And what is your favorite part of the hobby?
L: Cosplay is an amazing form of art. I love the creation aspect of that hobby, the creativity everyone is showcasing. You always learn new things, new techniques, I feel always challenged and never bored of creating costumes and impersonating characters I love ! Also, cosplay makes meeting people so easy ! You’re linked through a real passion, and you can share amazing moments with so many different people.
H: Cosplay mean the abbility to make dreams come true for others. When I started in 2005, I joined a group who used to go to hospitals to meet children and put some stars in their eyes (not shuriken i mean).
I: Cosplay means impersonating a character for a whole day which is really fun to begin with. To me its also a way to express my creativity and wear pretty costumes I couldnt wear in every day life.
What do you expect from your visit to Spain? Is this your first time visiting the country?
L: I’m living close to Spain and I’ve already been to Barcelona and Madrid, but never for cosplay. I am super excited to be there and meet the Spanish cosplay community. Everyone seems so kind and fun, and there is so many incredible cosplay artists in Spain ! Quiero beber cervesa y comer jamon con todo el mundo !! My Spanish is terrible ahah
H: For me it will be the second time. I went to Barcelona many years ago. I am just expecting fun and food 😀
I: I’ve started to visit spain with my parents when I was a child (Valencia, Alicante…) When I grew up I discovered Barcelona and Madrid. I would love to go to Andalousia some time in the near future. I’m looking forward to go back to Madrid, I’ve been there only once and it’s an amazing city. Besides I adore Spanish food so I expect delicious meals.
Have you decided your project for the finals in Madrid? Can you give us a clue?
L: I’ve picked the same costume that I made for the qualications, but I definitely want to improve it and make it as I wanted to do originaly. I’m still unsatisfied with some aspects of it, and I want to experiment new challenges, especially with electronics. I also want to create new props, as I can’t travel easily with the original one. Hope I will be able to do so !
H: yes! A clue? Let’s say that John Williams made the music of this saga :p
I: Yes we have. Here’s a clue “How dare you speak his name you filthy halflblood!!!”
Describe the cosplay community in your country using five words.
L: Inspiring – Friendly – Welcoming – Positive – Creative !
H: Fun craziness, friendship, skills and solidarity.
I: competition, dramaaaaa, friendship, imagination, talent.
