How did you discover cosplay and what made you start this hobby? How long ago?
K: I’ve been cosplaying now for about 6 years. I would consider myself and creative yet extremely nerdy person so cosplay came very easily to me, it was also a way for me to increase my confidence.
T: My friend discovered some cosplay skits on youtube in 2009 and it looked so fun that we decided we wanted to do it for Halloween. I went to my first convention in May 2010.
I: I made my first cosplay for a party at university in 2012. I started researching how to make it online and stumbled across the cosplay community – its stolen all my spare time since!
What was the reason behind your costume choice for the ICL preselection? Is this your first time joining an international cosplay competition?
K: I adore the character and game, I also enjoyed the challenge of 3D modelling her massive bow. This will be my third time, I have been lucky enough to be a part of Eurocosplay and Cosplay World Masters.
I & T: We both really liked the designs and style of The Witcher costumes long before either of us played it. Once we finally found time to play the game, we fell in love with the story and our respective characters. We’ve never competed on an international level before but we really wanted to bring these costumes to a wider competition as they’re so intricate and we’ve learned so many skills through making them.
What does cosplay mean for you? And what is your favourite part of the hobby?
K: Cosplay means a lot to me, it’s a way for me to express myself and learn new skills. My favorite aspect of this hobby is the way it brings people together, I have met all my closest friends through cosplay.
I: We both love the social aspect of cosplay. It’s opened so many doors to meet amazing people from all around the world and visit countries I’ve never been to. We can’t wait to share this experience with all the other representatives and finally meet cosplay friends from Madrid!
T: As Imogen said, we both love the social aspect of cosplay and being able to share skills and knowledge with so many new and different people. Personally, cosplay has given me so much confidence. It not only informed my decision to pursue a career in the costume industry (I’m a hat maker now) but also gave me a safe space to explore my gender identity and to come out as nonbinary.
What do you expect from your visit to Spain? Is your first time visiting the country?
K: This will be my first time in Spain and I’m so excited! My main mission is too have fun and make a bunch of new friends.
I: I’ve never been to Spain before! Growing up, I didn’t have much chance to travel but getting to experience new places through this hobby is incredible. I’ve met a lot of wonderful Spanish cosplayers online and I’m so excited to get the chance to meet some of them. Oh, and lots of sangria please!
T: I’ve been to Spain before but never to one of your beautiful cities so I’m really looking forward to the chance to immerse myself in history and culture.
It’ll also be lovely to meet all the other representatives and make new friends!
Have you decided your project for the finals in Madrid? Can you give us a clue?
K: Yes the only thing I will say is…For the Horde!!
I & T: We’ve decided to bring our preselection cosplays to the final so that we can focus on improving our skit and putting on a proper show for you guys! We have some exciting ideas up our sleeves that we can’t wait to show.
Describe the cosplay community in your country using five words.
K: Crazy, Fun, Close, Intense and Hilarious.
I & T: Diverse, substantial, creative, ambitious and social.
