Australia 🇦🇺 & Mexico 🇲🇽
Vye (solo): Hey, I’m Vye from Melbourne, Australia. I’m a former games developer and now a professional cosplayer. I’ve made around 300 cosplays over the years, and have a particular love for game characters.
DaliaScos (duo): Hello, I am Dalia Silguero, I am 28 years old, a cosplayer and cosmaker from Tamaulipas, Mexico, with over 10 years in Mexican cosplay. I was the Mexican representative at GICOF 2022 and runner-up at WCS Mexico in 2024 and 2018. I like singing, dancing, and traveling.
ItaniGde (duo): Hello! My name is Tania Grande but you can call me Itani, I’m a 30 year-old mexican graphic designer and I’ve been doing cosplay since 2009, I love food, nature and Japanese culture, this will be my first time representing México in an international cosplay contest and I’m very happy and excited to meet everyone and make new friends!.
How did you discover cosplay and what made you start in this hobby? How long ago?
Vye (solo): I didn’t know what cosplay was when I started. I just liked making things. I was actually a fan artist before I got more heavily into cosplay, and cosplay became a creative outlet for that same drive of expressing myself over the years.
DaliaScos (duo): When I was a child, I watched anime on YouTube, and that’s how I discovered cosplay. I loved the idea and decided to try it as well. I started at the age of 13.
ItaniGde (duo): I started watching cosplay in people who shared their work on internet, then I decided to try it by myself in 2009 because I also wanted to be as my favorite anime characters, it was an unforgettable experience.
What does cosplay mean for you? And what is your favorite part of the hobby?
Vye (solo): Cosplay is a form of art and expressing oneself. I generally like all aspects of the hobby, but particularly like the concepting stage and photoshoots, as I feel these are the two points which allow my creativity to flourish the most.
DaliaScos (duo): Cosplay means creating magic in real life for me. My favorite part is when you bring to life the characters you love so much and connect with new people.
ItaniGde (duo): Cosplay is a way to express your feelings and creativity, it is not only wearing the costume but entering in full character to give life to the character’s existence, I like the way cosplay is something that encourages you to learn new things and also gives you the opportunity to meet amazing people.
What changes do you see in the cosplay community in your country compared to when you started?
Vye (solo): I’ve been cosplaying for almost 20 years, so I have seen a lot of changes over my time. It’s hard to think of a change unique to my country, as I think most of these apply to everywhere. I suppose being in Australia, international competitions have only become more of a thing here in the past 10 years. We’ve always been quite isolated from the rest of the world, so I’m happy that we can finally participate with other countries on a bigger scale.
DaliaScos (duo): Mexican cosplay has grown exponentially and has started to stand out in international competitions. The passion for cosplay has greatly increased in the Mexican community.
ItaniGde (duo): I remember it was hard to buy wigs, circle lenses, some materials and fabrics, nowadays I think cosplay is an activity that has been better received in the society and now it’s easier to find that kind of stuff. Which is a good thing because now a lot of people have the opportunity of trying cosplay.
Why did you choose that project for the ICL national selection? Is this your first time joining an international cosplay competition?
Vye (solo): I choose to make cosplays for characters I love, and Kaveh seemed appropriate for a craftsmanship-based competition. I’ve participated in a few international cosplay competitions before, but they’ve all been performance-heavy. This will be my first purely craftsmanship based entry for an international comp!
DaliaScos (duo): Kaleido Star is my favorite anime, and since I was a child, it taught me that if I set my mind to something and work hard for it, I can achieve it. I have also been a representative of Mexico at GICOF 2022.
ItaniGde (duo): We choose Kaleido Star because it is a classic anime which provides a very beautiful message, it says that if you don’t stop trying and with a lot of effort you will eventually reach your dreams. This is my first time joining an international cosplay competition and I hope to have a beautiful experience in ICL
What do you expect from your visit to Spain? Is this your first time visiting the country?
Vye (solo): I’ve been to Spain once before for Japan Weekend in 2023. I am keen to be back to see friends, the Spain cosplay community, and the good food.
DaliaScos (duo): This is my first-time visiting Spain, and I am very excited to see new places and meet new people. What I love most about this competition is that you can meet people who share the same passion for cosplay at an international level. I hope to share my passion for cosplay and inspire everyone with our enthusiasm for this hobby.
ItaniGde (duo): It will be the first time outside my country, I’m really nervous but also very excited to visit and meet Spain, and also meeting all the other teams and all the people which made possible this beautiful event. We hope to leave a good image and let the world know the kindness and skill that Mexico has.
Have you decided your project for the finals in Madrid? May you give us a clue?
Vye (solo): As one of the online applicants, I already had the costume completed for a bit over half a year! I’ll be making some fun upgrades to my costume for finals though, so look forward to those.
DaliaScos & ItaniGde (duo): Entering online selections was interesting, we already had the information required and the project so we decided to take the opportunity, and it was a very unexpected but excited surprise when we saw our photo announcing our selection, we are very happy of being selected and want to give our best in stage. We made part of the costumes again to fix some details and made modifications to our performance, hope everyone likes it. We both are very happy and only have to thank a lot for the opportunity of being part of this event.
Describe the cosplay community in your country using five words.
